Ron Paul on the Military Draft

In his weekly column, Texas Straight Talk, Congressman Ron Paul shares his thoughts on the proposed draft reinstatement.

One can always count on Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX) to make a statement on controversial issues in Congress, such as the recent talk on reinstating the draft.

In this week’s Texas Straight Talk Rep. Paul writes about the recent proposal of Rep. Charles Rangel (D-NY) to reinstate the draft. This draft, as noted by Rep. Paul, would not only be used for military purposes, but would demand a certain amount of national service as well.

In his column Paul wrote:

To many politicians, the American government is America. This is why, on a crude level, the draft appeals to patriotic fervor. Compulsory national service, whether in the form of military conscription or make-work programs like AmeriCorps, still sells on Capitol Hill. Conscription is wrongly associated with patriotism, when really it represents collectivism and involuntary servitude…
