Starting around Thanksgiving, the Hallmark Channel has been showing Christmas movies in the place of their regular schedule. A Christmas movie on Hallmark consists of a dilemma being solved by Santa, or by doing the “right thing” because of an unspecified warm fuzzy feeling due to it being December in America.
Notably lacking from a Hallmark Christmas, is the mention of that holiday’s namesake, Christ.
After 20 or more of these movies, the recipe is clear, hot cocoa, decorated trees, and estranged family members forgiving each other, is what Christmas is all about.
Sticking out like a sore thumb was one movie, Saint Maybe, 1998. I only saw a part of it, but some of the songs sung were Jesus Loves Me, O Come All Ye Faithful, and The First Noel. Plus, at least one scene took place in an unmistakably Christian church. Hollywood is not on real close terms with Jesus.
