A failure to understand property rights

“I’m in favor of legalizing drugs. According to my value system, if people want to kill themselves, they have every right to do so. Most of the harm that comes from drugs is because they are illegal.”

— Milton Friedman
(1912-2006) Nobel Prize-winning economist, economic advisor to President Ronald Reagan, “ultimate guru of the free-market system” – 1986

[ A lot of times when you have a generic “legalize drugs” conversation with someone, they assume that since you advocate legalization, that somehow this equates to advocating the taking of drugs. Nothing could be further from the truth. Stone cold sober is the preferred way to go through life. But to think you are going to keep those who prefer an altered state by power of the State, is preposterous. We simply have the State approved drug, alcohol, and the rest prohibited. Both alcohol and drugs kill you, to think the State has the wisdom to pick winners and losers is absurd. They may have the legal authority, but time shows they do not have the moral authority. The reason is that your first property right, your body, belongs to you, not the State.]

“The growth of drug-related crime is a far greater evil to society as a whole than drug taking. Even so, because we have been seduced by the idea that governments should legislate for our own good, very few people can see how dangerously absurd the present policy is.”
