The American people are such suckers. Take the Trans Pacific Partnership, please. No one is against “free trade”, but that’s not what we are getting. Pat Buchanan pointed this out 20 years ago. At the time, Japan had roughly a 20 % tariff on our goods, China 40 %. We must have mirrored that on their goods right? Nope. Our markets were wide open. Nothing changes. All this does is continue the race to the bottom as far as wages go.
What has been leaked, are provisions such as protections for big pharmaceuticals that keep other countries from buying cheap generics. So if keeping life saving drugs from people is your goal, its met. Japan gets to keep tariffs on the products it wants to keep out. At last check, China, the most egregious example of nonreciprocal trade, isn’t even a part of this. Besides the basic premise of this agreement is so obviously wrongheaded, it is being dome in secret. By corporations. What does your gut tell you? An agreement that is being negotiated in secret by corporations, and labor is absent from the table? Oh yeah, sounds like a good deal to me…
Perhaps funniest of all, is that both NAFTA and TPP, while they were initiated by Republicans, were sustained and finalized by Democrats. And who do Unions continue to slavishly support? The Democrats. Just yesterday there was an article from northwest Iowa, Sioux City OKs land sale for $264M plant (pork processing). Funny thing about this article, while it crows about “1,100” jobs being created, it doesn’t mention what the wages will be. Isn’t that odd? 1,100 new jobs, and no mention of wages. That’s about the only damn thing that matters when talking jobs, and no mention of it.
Oh that’s right, it will be like all the rest of Iowa’s meat processing plants since the early 80’s. It will employ Mexicans at less than $10 an hour. Wow. What a benefit to Iowa that is. We give the company millions of dollars in subsidies and tax cuts, and they employ Mexicans at less than $10 an hour. (Just like Wells Blue Bunny) It can’t get any worse than let. But TPP sure tries.
Here’s another concept. Rather than argue about the theoretical pluses or minuses of ‘free trade’, lets look at the facts. What happened in the 21 years since NAFTA? The historical record is there, look at it. Are wages higher for the American worker? Are jobs more plentiful for the American worker? Did NAFTA result in good Mexican jobs thereby reducing the demand to illegally immigrate to the U.S.? No, no and no. Duh.
Why do you insist on being fooled again? I can understand being sold a bill of goods once. Smoke and mirrors. But how can it happen twice?
Like I say, no one is against “free trade”, but that’s not what we are getting. Couched in the agreement are provisions that take away our sovereignty in regards to immigration and the environment, always to the detriment of the American worker. Honest people don’t have secret agreements. Nor are they thousands and thousands of pages long. That is highly regulated trade. There is nothing free about that. Use your head people.
